Sabbath, in the first instance, is not about worship. It is about work stoppage. It is about withdrawal from the anxiety system of Pharaoh, the refusal to let one’s life be defined by production and consumption and the endless pursuit of private well-being.

~ Walter Brueggemann
(American Old Testament scholar and theologian, b. 1933)

So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all the work that God had done in creation.

~ Genesis 2:3

The Eternal is my shepherd, who cares for me always,
who provides me rest in rich, green fields beside streams of refreshing water;
who soothes my fears; making me whole again. Amen.

The whole point of Sabbath – rest – is to cease working in order to be refreshed and renewed. It’s a mandate, not an optional activity. It’s also for our benefit. When will you rest today?
